History of the Bangladesh Central Public Library
With the vision of building a knowledge-oriented, modern, and information-rich Bangladesh, the organizational structure of the Bangladesh Central Public Library was strengthened in 1983 in accordance with the recommendations of the Enam Committee. However, the foundation stone of the Central Public Library had been laid much earlier, on 5 February 1954.
Subsequently, on 22 March 1958, the Bangladesh Central Public Library commenced its journey in the University of Dhaka area under the Culture Division of the Ministry of Education, with an initial collection of 10,040 books. In 1977, the library was relocated to its present site at Shahbag, in the heart of the capital city.
In 1983, the Bangladesh Central Public Library, along with the then Divisional Government Public Libraries and the district-level Bangladesh Parishad institutions, was brought under a reorganized public library system. The district-level institutions were renamed as District Government Public Libraries, while the Bangladesh Central Public Library was placed under the Directorate of Public Libraries, under the administrative control of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
At present, the Bangladesh Central Public Library has a collection of approximately 225,000 items.
